Doctor (27) Launched His 2nd Edition Book after 18 Years

Dr Bonga Zulu : Astonishing! This young medical doctor, mentored by Veena Gangaram when she was teacher at Parkvalle Primary, found the little book he wrote when 8 years old, in the library of Congress in Washington DC in the USA! Bonga also found the book in Stanford University Library and in Michigan University Library. He was the first child author to publish a book at the age of 8 years old in Umlazi District, in 2002. After that, he received a lots of media publicity including being the Mercury’s front-page story. Department of Education used him for literacy programs awareness. Early in February 2020, he launched his book as a second edition after 18 years.

His mentor had this to say during the 2nd edition launch on the 2nd of February 2020 in Malvern, KZN:
“April 2002 was the turning point in my academic life. It was the day l was the day l was privileges to be selected by the Dept of Education to attend a Creative Writing Workshop conducted by my guardian angel Felicity Keats.

That first meeting with Felicity led to changes for the BETTER for hundreds of learners at Parkvale Primary School

Felicity asked me to send you my speech. That’s what l am doing. One such learner WAS shy 8 year old Bonga Zulu. Felicity conducted a workshop on the use of the RIGHT BRAIN in developing creative writing among-st learners. Out of 200 learners who wrote their STORIES BONGA ZULU  THE NAUGHTY BOY AND HIS LITTLE Sister caught Felicity’s attention.

She published the book and we hosted a huge launch at Parkvale in Sept 2002.

Learners and principals from neighboring schools, Departmental officials as well as members of ELITS graced the  successful launch. Dr. Bonga received huge coverage in  all the national newspapers as well as the tabloids.
It was quite an accolade for the Dancing Pencils when he appeared  on the front page of the Natal Mercury on a Friday morning. The media including TV and radio gave him mu h publicity as he was the first learner in the UMLAZI DISTRICT to publish and launch a book. This shy 8 year old pupil soon developed a lot of confidence and ea h year his writing skills academics results as well as his sporting activities improved and in grade 7. He was the first BLACK pupil to be  chosen as the Deputy Head Boy at Parkvale Primary

He received a scholarship to study at Glenwood Boys High School

The Dept of Education invited him to give MOTIVATIONAL. TALKS  to learners to encourage them to excel in their writing and academics in school. While in high school Bonga participated in various sports. He represented KZN in soccer in the under 15.17.19 teams. Bonga achieved good results in Matric and that resulted in him getting to China gig to study medicine as well. He persevered and overcame many obstacles in a foreign country including having to learn and master the Chinese language.
He graduated in the TOP 10 of his class out of  250 candidates
Today he and his sister who is a  graduate from the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in KZN own a Medical Centre in Pietermaritzburgh,  where they practice as doctors
“I discovered that my book was on the shelves of Michigan state university main library while visiting a friend one summer vacation in the US which got me curious on where else my book is being read , i searched online and discovered that its at library of congress in Washington dc, Stanford University libraries also and lastly at northwestern university. Which really made me proud of myself.” Proud Dr Bonga Zulu said during his 2nd edition launch.
